Do Oxford and Cambridge dominate that much? Would going to either of them greatly increses my job prospects? I´ve heard that Leeds also has a very good department. Any tips anyone?

Yup -- Oxford and Cambridge dominate the other UK institutions in that field. They don't dominate all the American universities, though. The University of California at Berkeley is the top rated English Literature PhD program in the US.

This is the reason so many students gather large amounts of debt after university, taking up useless degrees. Even if it might be what you like, you have to think practically in these modern times. This isn't the 1900's.
