Superb question.

It is absolutely true - the behavior you have stated.

It is an interesting situation where exactly opposite behaviors arise from the same cause - viz. feeling sad. Eating and nibbling endlessly helps keeping the mind away from the feeling of sadness. Sometimes, on the other hand, sadness becomes tension in the mind and in tense moments, it is not possible to eat anything, the stomach can literally constrict in high tension.
Well my answer is merely based on what I have observed, experienced and understood - I am no expert.

I think it is quite simple.

The same explanation that you find in your everyday life , when you are taking bath. When you fill the bucket with tap water and at the same time you are thinking about the next few things that you would be doing that day, you will wake up to close the tap long after the water had overflowed.

When the mind is very sad all the sense organs of the body are in oneness with the sad mind. They "withdraw" their activities albeit temporarily. Your hand will be simply putting the food in the mouth mechanically or not put at all.

Eating more when you are unhappy(frustration due to unfulfilled desire i. e when something happens contrary to your expectation) it is a defence mechanism of the mind trying to get over it by looking for other available means to satisfy yourself.
But eating nothing at all when you are sad(sorrow due to untoward happenings i. e. accident/death )means you are totally affected by it as you can't change it.

People, when depressed, tend to do things in extremes. Either they do it excessively or they don't do it at all.

People who eat a lot when they are depressed do so, because they find comfort in that particular kind of food. We call that the comfort food.

Sadness effects neurotransmitters of the brain, especially serotonin, which have an effect on our appetites. Also, food can be an escape for those who overeat.
