in red, blue, and yellow, they number up to 151
in gold, silver, crystal, it was brought up to 251
in ruby, sapphire, emerald, fire, leaf, colloseum, and XD, it was brought up to 386
the addition of pearl and diamon will bring the number up to 500, as far as is known right now

Right Now -including Diamond and Pearl- ther are 493. Without Diamond/Pearl only 386

let me tell you something. im 29, ok? i was into pokemon during when i was in 5th grade... pokemon is old and gay, let it be. if you like games, try new stuff, just some advice from a brother....
