Society dictates certain stereotypes on both the rich and the poor. The fact is, NOT all rich people look down on other people.
I know some people that are wealthy, but are not "mata pobre", as what we call it here in our country.
To answer your question, there are some rich people who look down on other people because of different reasons, reasons such as, first, they consider their money as a form of defense mechanism (compensation) to whatever insecurities they have.
Another possible reason could be that, they grew up in an environment that was probably too aristocratic.
Whatever reason they have, I believe that it still is no excuse to look down on other people.

I know some rich people and you couldn't tell they were rich unless you looked at their bank account. Sam Walton drove himself in an old pickup truck. H L Hunt drove himself in an old Dodge four door. I think you need to say that why do SOME rich people look down on others.

Not every rich person is snobby and pretentious. I know a lot of people who have loads of money, but you couldn't tell because they don't flaunt it except for the occasional nice purse or shoes.
Sure, there are rich people who are terribly annoying and lofty, but that doesn't apply to everybody and there are less wealthy people with superiority complexes as well.

If you are asking why rich people always look down on other people, well then you are using a glittering generality and you are wrong. Rich people don't always look down on other people.
