I've read on the internet (that trusty old friend!) that some believe to have already created/discovered a GUT and thus claim to have the "theory of everything". I'm not up to scratch on my unifications...i know it's about uniting gravity/quantum mechanics but what exactly will a GUT prove and are we REALLY as close as i've read?

Scientists are saying that in about a decade or so.
As sofarsogood said, the reactor will be huge step forward in the sting theory consequently the GUT.
GUT will combine all the basic forces of nature i.e gravity, electromagnetic, weak nuclear force and strong nuclear force.
Currently the gravity has been the most problematic.
I just cant wait for GUT.
I wonder what will happen when it does get proved or whatever.

You are right, a GUT will unify gravity with the other 3 forces. It will explain both quantum and relativistic effects.

String theory is the great hope for a GUT, but I wouldn't hold my breath. A recent article (now where did I see that) has several influential physicists saying it has been a long dead end that is wasting the work of a while generation.

That is pretty pessimistic, but even those who believe it say we need another major breakthrough or two, since the math is still far too complicated to solve out. And experimental evidence (evidence is too strong a word, call it "suggestive supporting data") is still technically far away, since strings are just so small. The new European reactor, when it comes on line (2007?) *might* provide some results that could tend to support it.

this is an theory, It hasn't been tried only theory-approximately. Grand Unification, grand unified concept, or gut is one in all a number of very comparable unified container theories or fashions in physics that predicts that at somewhat intense energies (above c4ca4238a0b92382dcc509a6f75849b0c4ca4238a0b92382dcc509a6f75849b4 GeV), the electromagnetic, vulnerable nuclear, and robust nuclear forces are fused right into a single unified container. [a million] to that end far, physicists have been in a position to merge electromagnetism and the vulnerable nuclear tension into the electroweak tension, and artwork is being accomplished to merge electroweak and quantum chromodynamics right into a QCD-electroweak interplay additionally commonplace as a results of fact the electrostrong tension. previous grand unification, there is likewise hypothesis that it somewhat is possible to merge gravity with the different 3 gauge symmetries into an theory of each and every thing.

No closer than we ever were. There's still no real reason to believe that gravity is quantum in nature and string theory is more description and philiosophy than science.

its possible.. but then again, there are conspiracies tht will probably not allow it to take full shape.. in fact, Dan Brown's book Angels and Demons dealt with this exact issue.. try reading it..
