Short for HyperText Transfer Protocol, the underlying protocol used by the World Wide Web. HTTP defines how messages are formatted and transmitted, and what actions Web servers and browsers should take in response to various commands. For example, when you enter a URL in your browser, this actually sends an HTTP command to the Web server directing it to fetch and transmit the requested Web page. The other main standard that controls how the World Wide Web works is HTML, which covers how Web pages are formatted and displayed.
HTTP is called a stateless protocol because each command is executed independently, without any knowledge of the commands that came before it. This is the main reason that it is difficult to implement Web sites that react intelligently to user input. This shortcoming of HTTP is being addressed in a number of new technologies, including ActiveX, Java, JavaScript and cookies.

http stands for hypertext transfer protocol. It is one of several different types of information a web browser is able to read. HTTP is the language used to write most web pages. The "hypertext" is the links on the pages that actually form the world wide web or the Internet. Putting http:// in front of a web page tells you browser that the file it is about to read is in hyptertext format. Because http is by far the most common protocol, if the http:// is left off, most browsers will use it by default.
There are other protocols, the next most common being ftp (file transfer protocol). FTP is used whenever a file is being being transfered between your hard drive and the Internet. Such as when you download or save a picture, program, etc. from a web site to your hard drive. Because that process is usually automatic, it is rare that you would actually type ftp:// into your web browser. Unless you administor a web site. Then you would use it to transfer files up to the web site.

HTTP is basically an agreed method for transferring web pages between the web page you are visiting and your internet browser.
The normal user almost doesn't need to be concerned with it except in a few circumstances.
