I understand that the universe is expanding due to the forces caused by the "big bang" but what is it expanding into? If by "universe" we mean the outer limits of a circle drawn around the furthest objects in "space" (is this what we mean??) is there anything beyond these objects that they are moving out into, and if so...is there an outer limit to this material creating a maximum area in which to expand?

The context of your question elucidates the fast that we, as three dimensional beings, lack the frame of reference to conceptually grasp the entirety of the universe, including all of it dimensions aside from mathematical models such as non-Euclidean geometry. In terms we can readily grasp.....the universe is expanding, and the areas into which it is expanding did not exist three dimensionally prior to the expansion.

I know, I know.....take an ibuprofen, it will ease the pain.

The Universe may be infinite. In that case, it can expand without expanding "into" anything. In any case, we will never be able to see the edge because we have an event horizon at the Big Bang that prevents us from seeing further. We see our event horizon expand, and we see it overtake material that is also expanding, but not as fast. Beyond that we cannot see.

All this is of course extremely difficult to understand, but as far as I as a layman know, the universe is expanding into NOTHING, meaning that it occupies new "space" where there was none before.

Our Universe is just what we, on earth, can see. This is known as the visible universe. There are billions of other universes out in space. Our Universe is expanding in space.

Basically, the universe is expanding into nothing. Nothing else is out there, so the universe expands into nothing.

universe is not specefied to ltd points it is vast &ever expanding galaxies r movin away frm each other &trying to occupy whole universe ieall space available there is no limit 2 obs.

It is expanding into itself.

The universe is not a shape so it doesn't have borders. You can't think in 3 dimensions. You can't draw it, it is near impossible to imagine it.
