Healthy eating will help you lose the excess flab and exercise will tone up your stomach to look better. Many people store excess fat in specific 'problem areas'. If someone is considerably overweight, the fat will be more evenly spread around the body. If you are not very overweight, the fat might only be stored in one (or a few) areas. Many people have problems with big thighs or bums or tums. If that's the only excess fat you're carrying then if you lose weight sensibly, *that* is where you'll lose it from. When someone has a specific problematical area, it's always the first place they store excess weight and yet also the last place they'll lose it from.

this probably is simple excess fat. Some men do only build fat on their stomachs, and nowhere else, no idea why. Just watch your diet, add a few veg to meals and exercise. Try walking out in the fresh air for a couple miles a day. The gym is a good place to go to gain muscle but not as good as standard exercise for losing weight. You probably won't have to do much, it's just that is where all your fat sits.

Carrying fat around your middle increases your risk for heart disease - get information on waist circumferance on the web to see how.
Beer or any alcohol is often a big factor, general fitness is another - do you get your daily exercise?
General diet is another thing, how much of your daily food is fresh from the source, without anything being done to it?
All processed foods contain sugars and salts and fat under one guise or another, so if you routinely eat a lot of these, you're in trouble.
Finally, if the rest of your body is quite thin, and you have a big tummy, get a check up to make sure it's not fluid accumulating in your abdomen due to some medical reason (ascites).
Good luck!

I played a lot of sport for a few years, and when I stopped I didn't reduce what I ate and I got a gut, like you describe.
I changed to a low fat diet and it mostly disappeared. I cut out fast food, sweets & chocolate, pop, fried food. Although I missed this I felt and looked so much better it was worth it.
