quadridecagon is 14 sided
i wouldn't know the name for 40 sided figure
i found it is tetracontagon

you can have any number of sides of course

if you had been referring to faces, they if you wanted a solid made of identical faces there are only 5 possibilities (in 3D space).

but sides, no limit.


as for the NAME? polygons use Greek roots (hexagon, heptagon, octogon). So a 40-sided shape would be a tetracontagon.

yes. if we can have a 4 sided shape, and a 360 sided circle, we most certainly can have something with 40 sides

depends if you are looking at regular polyhedra. if you are, then, the shape must satisfy the equation F+V-E=2, which is known as Euler's formula on convex polyhedra. In fact there are only 5 regular polyhedra, known as the platonic solids. Wikipedia source below may be of interest.

No reason except that with so many facets the sides would be so small that it look like a circle. Go to calculus and this very situation can be proved.
