The 1st answer is correct. It's a various of gas (not oxygen only) that got trapped in the joints. But because our joints are surrounded by thick layers of fat, muscles, and skin, the gas cannot escape our body. So the gas is still there, trapped between the joints and the thick layer. When you don't use your joints much (sitting or lying on the bed for a long time), the gas re-enter the joints. That's why a person can crack again his/her fingers (or other joints) after a few minutes (time varies between one person and the other). When you get up in the morning is the best time to crack your joints. Almost all joints on your body should crack after a long good sleep. Just don't do it too hard to prevent injuries or dislocation to the joints

a common joint strikes by a physiological selection of energetic and passive stream. once you attain the top of the kind the joint feels to have resistance. that's widely used by way of fact the elastic barrier. once you progression the joint previous the barrier you enter the paraphysiological area. This area is the place the “crack” noise heard. by way of fact the joint strikes previous the elastic barrier and into the paraphysiological area the pill that surrounds the joint stretches and the rigidity in the pill is replaced. this transformation in rigidity enables gasses (80% carbon dioxide) to be released, and that unexpected launch is the audible sound that's heard widely used as a cavitation. this theory is extremely resembling a soda bottle being opened. once you twist the cap of a pressurized soda bottle, the rigidity decreases and gasses are released ensuing in that “fizz” noise.

It is nothing more than oxygen that becomes trapped, so to speak, between the joints. When you kneel, or stoop down, the knee joints 'pop' to release the air. Simple as that :)

they should not, it may be a sign that your joints are not adequately lubricated.
