It is actually correct, you have to make your purchases within the first 48 hours from arrival. I have been through this process a million times and I am familiar with it.

48 hours is as per the law. A few years ago it was 24 hours (link pasted below), there are exceptions however and these do not fall under the "legal" grace period stipulated by the law.

I guess it depends on the country you are arriving from, or something like that, because I see quite opposite answers.
My experience: Last year I was staying in Hurghada for 2 weeks and on my way back on the very last day I was able to purchase duty-free, there was no problem.

Not that i no of!!I went about 2 months ago and we didnt purchase any of our duty frees untill the last day,nothing was ever mentioned about the 48 hour thing!! x
