It's often hard to measure popularity, but you can find out the top sites by traffic ranking at http://www.alexa.com. The top one hundred in the US can be found in the link below.
Incidentally, Yahoo is #1.

I'm not sure on that but I tend to stick to Yahoo Answers (obviously!), Yahoo 360 and MySpace! YouTube is quite popular too!

Completely free sites, no fee whatsoever to contact people, contrary to most other friend finder sites. The other 18 are paying sites so I won't bother listing them.
