Donald Rumsfeld recently said that by staying the course in Iraq, they are doing what Abe Lincoln would have done. Is it fair to compare GWB to Honest Abe? Fair to compare the fight to abolish slavery & maintain the Union to the Iraq war?

Rumsfeld has serious mental problems and no concept of factual history! Don't believe anything that is said now. They will say anything now, the heat is on. On Larry King last night, Donald Trump made it quite clear, and he spoke-up for the majority of Americans - including millions of Canadians, this war cannot be won. We are fighting a loosing battle. There is no, absolutely NO similarity to the war against slavery and this RELIGIOUS WAR! President Bush just doesn't seem to know how to find a way out of this war and save face! That is his only concern, his reputation and how history will view him as a leader and a president. He will go down as the President who deceived the World!

I don't know if this is a fair comparison, but history will tell. Lincoln fought a war to preserve the Union and in effect reunite the people under common ideas and goals. I believe we are doing the right thing in Iraq for the people of that country. Saddam Hussein was a cruelly brutal dictator and the people suffered under him. The idea that we are somehow worse indicates a hatred of freedom for everyone but yourself. Freedom is almost never acheived through peaceful means and it always requires a strong defense to flourish against those who would destroy it. I have never believed that Mr. Bush's motives were as altruistic as he portrays them though. Sometimes you do the right thing even though it is for the wrong reasons.

peaches: I take exception to 2 of your points.
1) What expertise does Donald Trump possess in military affairs which would qualify him as an expert? I am aware of none.
2) What makes you think he speaks for a majority of Americans? Polls? Polls overwhelmingly show that US citizens do not believe the war is prosecuted correctly, but there is no evidence that they believe we cannot win, or that we should abandon Iraq. In fact they show quite the opposite with the majority saying we must stay the course.

I believ that Honest Abe would be sickened to hear such comparison. Bush? Why did the fools of this country vote for him anyway? Abe was a great president. There is so much difference between Abe and Bush that it makes day and night seem so close together that identical twins look like they have nothing in common in comparison to day and night.

Yes, everything is fair to these neocons, they've been in power so long they've changed the rules of the game. They've been harping on this Lincoln theme for a while and Iraquis have picked up on it and started a civil war! (just kidding, but doesn't that sound like the kind of spin Republican would do if Democrats were in power?)

I love liberal excuses and the Republican banter.

Only history will tell if Bush was a good President.

Keep in mind that during Lincolns presidency his opposition called him a dunce, to stupid to run the country.

In hearing today's critics you would easily be able to compare the two.

I am waiting for the liberal candidate that has something to say other than "I'm not Bush" and come up with their own ideas.

No. Bush has already proven that he is a liar, you can't compare that to honest Abe. Bush and Rumsfeld are both disgusting men in my opinion.

No. They're not even close. Lincoln was a far, far bettter president and a greater visionary than Bush. Also...Lincoln was elected, not appointed by the USSC.

Is it fair... well I guess he can compare Bush to whoever he wants, so yes. Is it a good comparison? NO. Lincoln was a liberal, Bush is a conservative lunatic.

Lincoln is actually quoted as saying he doesn't care about slavery, but that he will do whatever necessary to preserve the union.

That is an insult to Lincoln and an indication of how out of touch Rummy really is.
