I recently lost my mobile so had it barred. I understand this means people can't access the SIM stored information but if someone was to put another SIM card in the handset can they access the phone memory info, like text msgs and photos?? Its bugging me i don't like the thought of someone looking at my stuff!

In the UK it is illegal (although not impossible) for you to access the information on the phone, or use the phone in any way, after it has been "barred as stolen." Once the phone is barred, it cannot be started by an ordinary user.

The SIM card will be disabled, too...but potentially is much easier to get telephone numbers from it, as well as stored text messages.

In future, do not store any sensitive information on the phone. Back it up at every opportunity to a computer or the Internet...and then delete off the phone. This is inconvenient...but in life we have to make the decision to trade-off convenience versus are our own safety.

When the phone is reported lost or stolen the network barrs the SIM card first of all. This means that the SIM is now unregistered and will simply display sim card registration failed. It will no longer gain a connection the network. They will also blacklist the handset by using the IMEI or serial number ofthe phone. This stops the phone from gaining any access to any GSM, or 3G network. However, the handset can stil be used as a media device. therefore people can still take your pictures off it or look at names or numbers stored on the phone

Both the SIM and phone will be barred from accessing the network. (the barring will prevent the phone being used on any network in that country)

However, they can still access your phone list, saved text messages, call history etc.

If you don't want this to happen, then you need to set up the PIN code on the phone

If the phone is taken overseas, then it can be re-used with another SIM card.
