Our life and our decisions are personal only to the extent they do not transgress into someone else's personal life and decisions.

Love proposal should certainly be decided firmly and entirely in personal interest. However, a rejection must not be conveyed very rudely or indifferently - after all we are human beings and do understand others' feelings as well.

So, the denial must be out and out a personal decision, but must be conveyed very carefully with a shock-absorber, though quite firmly as well so as to leave no doubt hanging.
I agree, to balance all this is not easy - yes, denying a love proposal made to oneself is indeed a tricky affair, because someone's tender heart is to be broken. At the same time, instead of giving any excuse, it is always better to say, I have no such feelings for you.

If they're our lives, they must be personal. Rejecting someone's love is a personal choice, and valid, but it takes a lot to make a love proposal, and having it rejected is life-altering. So any reasons you can give to reject, even those based on personal choice (like why did you make that choice), are going to be really important to the person who proposed. So it's better to think of the other person's feelings than some dictates of society when formulating a response.

It is a personal choice. It would be very immoral to enter into a relationship in which you had no feelings and would lead to much more pain than declining someone's proposal in the first place. A little pain now to avoid much greater pain later.

It's your choice. You don't have to accept someone's proposal. Its the 21st century not the 7th.
