depends on what STD you have... something like crabs you'll notice right away, while herpes might be dormant for months.

It depends on the STD
If you have syphilis you can asymptomatic for a very long time
The only clues you might be aware of are are painless chancres. And even that disappears after a while without treatment. But the disease continues. If left untreated you might get neurosyphilis.

Sometimes forever. Something like herpes could show fairly quickly while something like HIV could be dorment for years. Just use condoms and get tested often.

Forever. Many people never show symptoms for herpes or syphilis. That's what makes them so easy to spread.
