http://www.fjordtravel.no/tours/winter/northern_lights/northern_lights_safari.html <<< hope this helps
The Northern Lights activity takes place all year in all types of weather. However, to actually see the lights, the weather has to be dark and clear (no guarantee!). In Tromsø it is dark between August and April, with the main Northern Lights season from November to April. The Northern Lights are visible from the afternoon until the middle of the night.

Hi!
Welcome to my country - Norway. I'm sure you're gonna like it!
So you're going to Tromsø. Bring warm clothes then.... It's gonna be cold.
The Northern lights are pretty cool, and Tromsø is the best place to them. The lights go all the way over the northern parts of Scandinavia, Island, southern parts of Greenland, north Canada, Alaska and the north coast of Sibir.
You can even spot the southern lights in Tasmania and South New Zeeland.
Norway and Tromsø, is anyway the best place to see them.
The Northern Lights appears all year, but they are easier to see in winter, cause in the summer, the sun never goes down in the north. In winter, the sun never gets up and it's dark 24h/24h.... This makes it easier to see the lights.
The lights appears very often. If not every night, at least every other night. There could always be clouds blocking the view though. You should also avoid nights when the full moon is out, cause it shines so bright and kind of ruins the northern lights.
Winter time in Tromsø is between September and April, so you should be good. Hope you'll get to see it, and enjoy you're stay in beautiful Norway!

At Night. Sorry,,, almost any time of the year. I assume you know the cause of Arora Borealis. Solar activity. A few days after a large solar flare is best. If you time youe trip to coincide with one. If not just trust to luck
