I have a 206 that has intermittant problems starting. the engine turns but does not start. Yesterday it made an awful sputtering noise when I tried to start it. Does anyone have any ideas what this could be? The engine is a 1.4LX petrol engine.

It's just had full service and the plugs were changed in that service. I'm taking it back to the mechanic who did the service but wanted some info before he looked at it. Up until now the car has run like a dream.

you really need a diagnostic check to rule out sensor malfunction but check you have fuel coming up to engine first and check to see if you have spark at the plugs it could save about 40.00 quid on a test if it is just a blocked filter or dodgy leads

there are a lot of intelligent people on this site unfortunatly none have answered your question. i wish that folk on here would just shut up and not answer questions with stupid answers, this does not help the site and it will scare normal folk away from posting genuine questions.
Ok, did your vehicle run ok before the mechanic serviced it, if so then he may have not checked the gaps on the spark plugs, these plugs are *flung* from the back of a lorry into the stores and they may have closed thier gaps when they hit the ground.
another fault with th 206 is the coil packs, these break down all the time and if you are lucky you will be covered by peugeots 60,000 miles OR 3 years warranty, if so take it to guys like myself and we will help you.
good luck.

I have a petrol renault clio and i have the same problem, my car just won't start. They said at first it was the 'Crankshaft sensor.'...
My friend has a peugeot 206 and its very similar to my car...now they are saying that a wire to the computer inside it was loose and went 'straight to earth'..
Maybe its a computer problem like mine..with modern cars thats the main cause of any problems....my car broke down 40 miles from my house and i got the AA to it...they were brilliant....you should get them out..they have a computer and can diagnose the problem straight away.

I used to have a 106 1.4 quicksilver so chances are we had the same engine, unfortunately it had so many problems I spent about 50% of the time in a hire car (watch out for the engine randomly cutting out, that prob in particular can be lethal!).
When I experienced this problem it was the immobiliser chip in the key not transmitting to the receiver properly, but you say when it starts its very spluttery it could be a whole range of problems from a dirty carb to a blocked/frozen fuel line.
Book it into your local garage and let the (supposed) pros handle it.

It is a Peugeot -- one of the crappiest vehicles on the road. This is not, by the way, a sarcastic answer. I am amazed that the damn company has not gone bankrupt a dozen times over with the level of garbage that is puked out from the factory doors year in and year out. Not even the lowest Ford Pinto built by beer bellied union workers in the U.S. could be held to the Peugeot's low standards of reliability, workmanship and engineering. And yet, there are always what appears to be intelligent people lining up to be tortured by the Peugeot plight, making auto mechaincs and towing companies wealthy. We kicked their @ss out of the States, along with Renault years ago. Yuk!

obviously something the mechanic has done, could be a simple case of loose plug leads ,is this a proper mechanic or a roadside PLC ?,you don't say the age of the car but check ignition leads to plugs for security and the other ends to either the distributor cap ( round ) make sure this is secure and located properly . or an ignition module and any wiring around this ,hope this helps and good luck from Liverpool UK.

Hello,
It could be anything from as simple as low fuel in the tank to the electronic control unit failing.
Do you tend to run your tank low on fuel a lot? if so it could be dirt picked up from the bottom of the tank. Check fuel filter is clean.
If you have enough fuel in tank, undo the fuel pipe where it attaches to the fuel injection or carb whatever your car has, get someone to turn the engine over a couple of times by the key, if fuel flows from the pipe then you know that fuel is getting up to the carb / injection. Is car left outside overnight? is it damp in the morning? well it could be the leads are damp if so use a hair dryer to remove the dampness then car should start.
Do you service it regularly? yes? then it shouldn't be much, no well it could be spark plugs, leads breaking down.
Have to go, my ambulance is here to take me to hospital for dialysis, I have kidney failure. Good luck, let me know how you get on, Jimmy

As far as I remember, all 206's have hydraulic clutches. The slave cylinder could be leaking, it might just need a bleed or there is low fluid level in the clutch fluid reservoir. Take it to a garage, it's a 10 minute job to bleed the clutch. Worn clutches slip, I doubt there is anything wrong with the actual clutch itself. It's a problem with the actuation.

You need to have a diagnostic check done it sounds electrical to me if you have a coded key and the engine just turns but wont start give the key a little tap on the floor its just static and the car should start after.
