I got a new goldfish at the weekend as a companion for my existing one (who has been on his own for 2 years). They haven't left each other's side and are totally inseparable. Is this normal? They are like a couple who have just fallen in love (and consequently have become very boring, as they are just sitting there, side by side).

They are in heat, not in love :)

Goldfish do get lonely by themself, they are a community fish. If the one you just got is a baby then its way too young to mate, sexual maturity happens around 2 years of age. The males will have breeding tubercles on their gill plats and the front ray of their pectoral fins.

When goldfish mate the male will chase after the female and keep ramming his head into her butt and squishing her against thing to make her release the eggs. Once the eggs come out the male will release his milt. If the eggs aren't removed they will eat them.
