I understand about using secondary accounts etc. but my main account still gets spam (which i never open). Is there any other way I can avoid this happening? Can anyone advise me please?

Thank you so much!

As others have answered - you can't stop SPAM - but I use Mailwasher (free version is available though it is limited - www.mailwasher.net) which lets me view mail on the remote server BEFORE I download it - and stops me inadvertently activating any links that tell the spammer mine is an active email address.
You can also "mark" senders in Mailwasher to blacklist them, or to blacklist a whole domain. Then if you get more from that source Mailwasher automatically marks it as blacklisted for you. When you click "process mail" it deletes (and/or bounces if your servers let it) the blacklisted mail or mail you have marked for deletion.
You can also mark senders as "Friends" (individually or by domain).
Mailwasher doesn't stop the problem of SPAM but it does help you deal with it.
I also use Yahoo for my mail as the spam filters on Yahoo are really excellent - 99.99% of SPAM goes into the bulk mail folder. I still check the folder from time to time but it is very very rare for me to find a genuine email there.
Try forwarding your "other" mail to your Yahoo address and that way you will get the benefit of the Yahoo SPAM filters working on your mail.
Again - it doesn't stop SPAM - but it makes it a lot easier to deal with.

Unfortunately SPAM is a part of life. Until people stop being stupid enough to buy the products and stop making money for the ba5tard5 that send it there will always be SPAM.
All it takes is 1 out of every 1000 people who get SPAMMED to open the mail and visit the site for the SPAMMER to make money. The number per 1000 people that is stupid is much higher than that...

There is virtually no possible way to stop spam. If you can come up with one, then you will be very very rich!

You can, however, improve your current spam filters. Most of these are provided by your e-mail provider. A good way to stop spam is to apply a word filter... most spam has words in it that are not in common emails between you and your friends. just filter out emails with those words and you will improve your spam filter.

Spammers create new ids every day. The only way to stop them is to keep reporting them. Unfortunately, when one account gets shut down they start another, so the cycle never ends

that's what the majority folder is for----so in the event that they're going to bulk, your direct mail shelter is doing what that's meant to, by ability of pondering it as direct mail. needless to say, you have been beginning some them, in case you recognize that they are "show", AND in accordance to "anti direct mail professionals", that's the unmarried worse undertaking you're able to do. by ability of beginning any direct mail----notwithstanding if purely to click the UNSUBSCRIBE link----it indicators the spamming device, that yours is a "responsive" address, which they might then sell to their "cronies" and you gets 1000's greater, for everybody you open or unsubscribe to. you are able to delete the "stuff" in bulk folder, your self, (why no longer daily) . purely click the "empty" link next to it. OR, exchange the direct mail settings to delete right this moment upon arrival, and you will by no ability see any of them. Any mail you prefer to acquire, could be on your address e book, so as that they gained't be lost to the majority folder. sturdy luck.
