Very simply because we dont want anyone to stare at our adult bodies. Why do children not feel that way! Because of their state of innocence! When we grow up the filth in our and other minds clog our brains!
When Adam & Eve were in their pure state they were naked yet they did not feel it, because of the purity of their minds!

It's called sexual awareness. When society dictates that the naked body is a sex object, people will automatically think nude = sex. For those of us that come to realize total body acceptance, nude becomes a state of freedom.
Sex is a pleasurable part of life and natural. Unlike animals, humans are attracted to each other all the time, not specific times of the year just to procreate. Once you accept that your body is not just for sex, you can enjoy the free feeling of being nude.
I believe everybody has a desire to be nude; to be unrestricted by textiles. Unfortunately, they are so obsessed with sex that it blocks their natural desire to be nude.
Ashamed to be nude? It's just a state of mind.

The simple answer... religion.
Religion teaches people that nudity is wrong and, as society is structured on religious principles nudity is banned. Fortunately a growing number of people are recognising that non-sensical view but the majority still believe what they're told about nudity being a "sin" and, consequently, wrong.

not all adults feel that way, but in our society in the first world, its socially unacceptable to go around nude.. also, we are "programmed" to believe that our bodies are imperfect and ugly unless we look a certain way, that nobody does
