I would try a plastic "scraper" like is used to apply "bondo" when repairing a dent in a car for example. If there was some way to safely heat up the surrounding area and therefore the plastic, you might be able to get it down enough that you could use goof off or something similar to rub away the rest. I believe I'd call the manufacturer and/or the appliance store and see if they have a solution. I'm sure it's not the first time this has happened. We men aren't bright at times. Well, we're always bright but we just have so many manly/ world saving ideas occupying our giant brains that trivial things such as tending to open fires just aren't alloted much space. good luck.

Take an SOS pad.Wet it throughly and apply GENTLE pressure in a circular motion. If you keep it wet and do not bear down,it will not scratch.Chances are that the grease has been heated up enough to get baked on.None of the products mentioned previously, will work.Be patient and keep moving the wet pad in a circular motion, and the baked on grease will slowly come off.Put the kettle away and take it out when you need it.

It should scape of when cold, use wood or hard plastic scraper. chilling the melted plastic with ice and some salt might help it to break any bond with the steel.
