I just graduated college with a BA in Int'l studies. I wrote for my high school paper, and in college I did it on/off. My dream is to write for a magazine like Glamour or Marie Claire. I don't want to do like makeup tips or stuff like that, I want to bring important issues to young people in a fun, fresh way. The thing is I don't know where to begin. Does anyone have any ideas? Should I start out freelance and then hope to get a job at a magazine? Thanks!! I appreciate it.

I am so in this same situation! I start tomorrow as an errand boy for a magazine. They're going to train me in every entry level field and move me to full time as soon as something opens up. Take any job you can at a magazine. Many publishers promote from within so if you put on your resume that you're interested in writing, they'll remember that when a position opens up. Writing editorials for newspapers may be of help too.

The bottom line is, don't pigeonhole yourself. Just because your final goal is working at Marie Claire or Glamour doesn't mean you will be able to start there (I hope to write for a tech magazine, but I'm starting at an interior design magazine).

Good luck!

Get any work experience in any media you can, whether it's newspapers, magazines, radio or television. I personally don't think your best option is to start as a freelance because you will not be meeting the right kind of people. You also learn so much from just being in a buzzing newsroom.
Show the News Editor of your local newspaper how keen you are, and even offer to work for free for a week to get the experience. Use that chance the best you can and convince him or her that you are someone they need. It's pretty common for people to make the jump from newspapers to magazines, although the writing styles can be different. Good luck and I hope that helps.

Start as a freelance. The more your articles appear in different magazines the more people will know about you and maybe different magazine editors will take notice and hire you. OR You could work as an intern in some high fashion Magazine, this might help as well.

Start at the bottom of any magazine, even if it means interning for free, and make as many contacts as you possible and then start knocking down doors! Once you've accumulated enough contacts, make calls and set-up appointments. Tell your contacts exactly what you've told us here, but have some writing examples, ideas and articles with ya to show them how much THEY NEED YOU. It's truly a noble thing for you to want to work at a beauty magazine with the intention of shedding light on important issues rather than write fluff peices like "how to please your man".

As anyone who has made it to the top of the magazine world will tell you, it's who you know, and not so much how you write...unfortunately. The best of luck!!!!

Take ANY job at a magazine - work your way up and make contacts at the same time. The media industry is quite incestuous. Do freelance stuff on the side if you can fit it in.
