It works because the dry ice (frozen Carbon Dioxide, freezes at -73C) is put into a sealed container (the plastic bottle with top screwed on) and then allowed to heat up to ambient temperature naturally which will be in the range 10C - 30 C. This heating up of the dry ice means that the ice will melt quickly and turn to a gas. Because the gas volume is many times that of the dry ice in the bottle the bottle cannot contain the build up in pressure and the bottle bursts violently causing the explosion.
WARNING to everyone! >> This is a very stupid thing to try and do as you have no control as to when the bottle will explode so it could explode into your face or body and kill you or even worse, your best friend! LINK> http://www.dryiceinfo.com/Pictures/dry%20ice%20bomb%20injury.jpg

Didn't see anything about lemonade, but the release of CO2 from dry ice in it's rapid expansion alone probably causes the explosion, and if lemonade is used, the citric acid probably reacts with the CO2, like when you add baking soda and vinegar together. Dry ice expanding in fresh air alone is not a chemical reaction, only a change of state of matter.

Be careful when "playing" with dry ice, the explosive effect/affect can put your eyes out, and in fact, some places have laws against using it, see: http://www.dryiceinfo.com/fog.htm

liquid nitrogen is better than dry ice but the same safety precautions are relevant. But before your given access to it you should be aware of the precautions anyway.
