If you were to hang him, you'd be guilty of getting history in a mess. I'm not sure when hanging was first introduced in Scotland (and you have to remember that they had and still have a separate legal system from England) but it was generally used for commoners. Nobility (even traitors) were usually beheaded - in the unlikely event that they survived the process of capture.

You couldn't try and convict him by modern laws - he didn't live in the present. Even at the time of King Charles I he did not accept that a court had the right to try him because his position as King was by divine authority. So I'd guess the Macbeth could claim the same - lots of kings have gained their position by deadly force and assassination.

So I guess you'd be looking for quotations in the play that other characters in the play consider his behaviour to be treasonous and punishable.

Not quite sure why'd you want to hang the dude, since Macduff cuts his head off in the last act.

He kills the king and like his best friend. No exact quote, but we kow he does it. Then again, I haven't finished the book yet =P
