My boyfriend and I have been going steady for about 7 l/2 years. We haven't married yet because of problems with my teen daughter. Nevertheless, whenever he introduces me to cashiers, strangers, or people he doesn't know, he introduces me as his WIFE instead of his girlfriend. When I ask him why he always does that, he says, "because I want to". Does his behavior hold any psychological significance? I just can't figure it out. Should I tell those people that I am his girlfriend and not his wife, or should I just "play along"?

I think the only real significance is that it's sweet.

He views you as his wife.

After the time you guys have been together, you're pretty much husband and wife. There's no difference except on government papers.

Play along.

And if you find that you don't like the idea of being his wife, maybe it's time to re-evaluate your relationship and your life.

And discuss things with your daughter. Because if you DO want to get married to him, just do it. She should be understanding enough after all this time.

Probably he may feel better saying you are his wife rather than girlfriend if you have a teen daughter present in front of strangers.
or
He wants to marry you...

You should only complain if, after you all marry, he starts referring to you as his girlfriend! I refer to my boyfriend as my fiance sometimes because we have been together so long and have a child and it just seems childish that we are not married. Your boyfriend may feel the same way. Please don't rush it though. I don't think I'll ever get married, so you don't have to either!

its probably his way of showing u respect, that he sees u as a wife not just a 'girlfriend', its also letting others know that u are a 'proper' couple
I wouldnt worry about it, seems he loves u, men can do strange things to show how much they care about us
if everything else is ok then y worry about it

Maybe he is trying it out so he gets used to the idea or maybe he is hinting to you that he wants to be more.......If you don't want to be married to him tell him that so he gets the hint. Most men run at the thought of marriage but he really wants to possess you in public. He could also be trying to scare away any potential guys who might hit on you. But the logical thing to me is he wants to commit.

so he doesnt have to marry you in real. try asking him to marry you and see how he responded. if he procrastinate it, then it will never come. after 7.5 years.. unless u guys have an agreement of no marriage at the moment..

but yes, he loves being ur bf...

He loves you. he wants everyone to know that he loves you. That you are much more than just a fling or a girlfriend. he is serious about your love.

Congratulations! It must be wonderful to be loved so much!

play along.. its simple for people to understand & accept. I doubt that your boyfriend is trying to be bad. Its a social thing.

After 7.5 yrs i would not get too worried about it, in some states you would be his 'common law' wife!
