Don't wash it in your machine cos it will probably shrink. I have washed dry clean only articles in cold water in the sink. Haven't had a mishap yet but you are taking a big risk.

If you want to wash a cotton jacket in the washing machine and it says to dry clean only, there could be a couple of reasons why it calls for dry cleaning: It could shrink. The dye could run. It will need to be ironed.
I would wash it alone or with like colored items in cold water in a gentle cycle. You can hang it to dry if you think it could shrink, or dry it on low or cool, gentle cycle.
There are lots of clothes labelled "dry clean only" which I wash in my machine.
Dryel may work great, but I get skin problems & headaches from chemicals so I've never tried it.

If it's all cotton, (and the label will tell you,) it may be ok to try washing it, although I would use a delicates or minimum-wash programme. But, if it has other fibres, or has a trim, such as a binding around the hem ir something appiqued to it, or if there is something on it, (buttons, for example, ) that is a different colour, that might be the reason why dry-clean-only is advised, as fabrics shrink at different rates and some "bleed" colour.
If in doubt, pay up and look big. Get the jacket dry cleaned.

If it's cotton it should be fine, is it lined with something synthetic? That might cause it to need dry cleaning. Some things are ok washed in the machine, it can be a way in which shops protect themselves from claims. How much do you love it and how much did it cost? I would try washing it by hand in cool water raather than putting it in the machine if I didn't want to dry clean it

Dry cleaning can be very expensive. Your cotton jacket should be alright on the lowest was possible. Only was it for a few minutes and then cancel the cycle. Use the programme dial or button to select rins. Let this finish completely and then make sure you choose the lowest spin (usually 800 rpm) Hang the garment on a coat hanger and secure the coathanger on the line.

Just as a "for instance"...
I had a former boss that had delivery drivers. The drivers had to wear the company T-shirt when making deliveries. They were instructed to turn the shirts back in for dry-cleaning at the end of the week. Some people didn't listen. But those that "borrowed" the t-shirts after they quit and washed in the normal wash found out the t-shirts disintegrated. The boss didn't want his logo to be on the evening news, so he dry cleaned the t-shirts.

I have washed a lot of suits, leather and suede jackets in the washing machine without causing them any damage whatsoever. I should think your cotton jacket will be fine washed at the temp you would wash a tshirt at (poss 40 degrees).
You may, if it creases up well, have to hang it to drip dry, or at least put the machine on a gentle spin to be safe.

Depends on the material. If its wool you would probably ruin it. Other than that its probably washable on the delicate cycle of your machine. Hang to dry. The dry cleaning only tag is usually there to protect the seller but most items can be either washed on delicate or hand washed. If its something that could fade then rinse in cold water and vinegar before to set the color.
