Ive recently had a cold which made my throat really itchy.
This is a big problem when I sing since (duh) my throat is itchy...
I know that drinking tea with lemon and honey and all of that is good for your throat but I sing in bars and nite clubs so its kinda difficult to get an order of tea in a bar!
Any suggestions as to what I can drink or use to sooth my throat in between sessions or before I sing?
I was told that a glass of sherry helps...but i dont want to take chances.
Please help!

Alcohol, like caffeine, dehydrates the body and thus the vocal folds. The condition of dehydrated vocal folds makes for an inferior singing instrument. In addition to the physiological problems inherent in alcohol, anything that distorts the mind or nervous system is going to impair the vocalist's ability to sing properly. An occasional glass of wine or cocktail will not destroy your voice, however drinking alcohol even a day or two prior to singing is absolutely a bad idea.

Not only coffee but caffeine in any form should be avoided before a performance. The reason for this is that caffeine is a diuretic and causes dehydration. When the body has any level of dehydration, the vocal folds are one of the first organs to suffer. The vocal folds need to be very hydrated in order to function properly. It is important when you are performing to have the voice in prime condition. Also caffeine can contribute to nervousness and cause you to be jittery on stage. Even if caffeine doesn't seem to have that effect on you normally on stage you may notice a huge difference. It's best to be as stress free as possible prior to performing.

I normally drink a cup of warm (not hot) milk with two tablespoons of honey in it. Either that, or you could try a big glass of baileys, which helps with stagefright as well.

A few of the women that I work with swear by warm water with a squeeze of lemon...I prefer cold water with the lemon squeeze.
