Who was that kid next to you? Well, an ultimate card would be based on its popularity and hype before and after. Example - Master of Dragon Knight (Fusion monster). The card only came out in Japan but never in the US. That may be an example of an ultimate card. Not to be confused with Ultimate Rare cards, they might be cards that are look like they're not like a big deal, but worth their use in Duels. Example - Elemental Hero Wildheart. He was a common and ultimate rare in the same booster (I think), Elemental Energy.

I think the kid got an Ultimate rare card in his pack. Ultimate rares are easily recognized by their golden foil all over the card. Valuble Ultimate rares include: Dekoichi The Battle Chanted Locomotive, Mobius The Frost Monarch, Horus The Black Flame Dragon LV8, and Sacred Phoenix of Nephthys. Ultimate rares generally fetch $10 more than a card would normally go for. More if the card is valuble. Ultimates are pretty rare, maybe like 4 in the box. There are no more guaranteed ratios in boxes.
Note: Ultimate rares are always rare cards. No common cards can be Ultimate rare.
