I have been asked in school to write a term paper on a particular subject. So I need to know what it means and the format to use in writing it.

Unfortunately, term paper is a catch-all term that usually means a researched paper on a subject. It all depends upon the individual teacher's requirements as to what all that entails. For example, that might mean a ten page, ten source paper (ten references used) that must include at least three books and three magazines as sources. It would help if you included the class for which it is written (sciences typically use APA format; English classes and history classes use MLA often) and the topic. Ask the teacher about the length and format if you aren't given that information. Hope this helps!

If you're in middle school or high school usually the teacher says what format is expected.

"Term paper" means you write it and hand it in near the end of the term. You have some time to research and write about your subject. Unless your teacher says otherwise, you'd probably be ok using 1" or 1 1/2" left and right margins and double vertical spacing. You may want to use a cover sheet, with the title of the work centered on the top half of the sheet and with your full name, the class, and the date somewhere else on the cover sheet. Your teacher is probably expecting you to include footnotes if you have to research. If appropriate, you could add a table of contents (if you have a "zillion" pages and sub-topics). You may be expected to add a bibliography at the end (a list of all the books you used in your research.)

Of course, there's the chance your teacher has used this term and really means that you write a paper about your topic and maybe do more in terms of format than put your name and the date in an upper corner and the title centered near the top of the first page, with the writing beginning after double-spacing down from the title. As the teacher about format.
