i and other three roommates share a broadband router. i establish a tcp connection to a host outside my LAN. during the connection, can that host ping my computer?

No. If you have 2 other computers sharing your internet connection then your router is providing Network Address Translations. In other words, all 3 computers are sharing the same external ip address. Therefore at best, the host can ping your router. Whether or not your router responds to the ping is determined by its capabilities and configuration. It is very likely that you can configure router to ignore pings.
