But for billions, their faith is the most important crutch they have. The morality and motivations of these teachings are, perhaps, suspect, to put it euphemistically, but, then, the shepards must guide their sheep, right?

A person is sentenced to prison for two reasons: (i) Lest he is a trouble to the law abiding citizens of the country: and ii) To keep him free the environment that acted as a catalyst to commit the acts that took him to jail so that he has time for introspection and reform himself.
As regards, your other statement regarding the church indoctrinating the people and inciting them to commit acts of crime, the least said the better. All religions should preach love to all, whether belong to your church or not and the spirit of accommodation and tolerance.

totally agree with you but the fact that we as human beings trust that which seems harmless is our downfall for we begin by trusting the congregation, the leaders and the teachings and after a while we have put our faith in someone elses god and some one elses beliefs with no real trust in our own belief.
