Here are links that will take you to all the government programs that sell properties they own. You will note however that they require you work with a licensee.
Homes and properties being sold by the different departments in US Government:
http://www.hud.gov/homes/homesforsale.cfm
REAL ESTATE FOR SALE BY THE UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE (USDA):
http://www.resales.usda.gov/
Real Estate for Sale by US Government:
http://www.firstgov.gov/shopping/realestate/realestate.shtml and this link: http://www.homesales.gov/homesales/mainAction.do
This gives you a lot of research time but if you are serious in persuing purchasing these types of properties and you get professional assistance it can be a very lucrative business.

The social security website is free. Many localities have their own search sites. Try doing a search on the location and see what you can find. Finally, there are other people online that will seek out the records for you occasionally...people like to help each other. Post a query at rootsweb or another free site and see who answers. You may find a cousin or two!
