Let me give you a little background on me. I have been suffering from depression since I was a teen. I am now 26 and finally have found treatment. I admitted myself into the hospital and was put on an antidepressant. My stay at the hospital was brief (3 days) and when I left, I felt like a million bucks again!
While I was in the hospital I was taught coping mechanisms. They have helped me and I hope they will help you.
First of all see a psychologist. They can help you figure out what caused your depression and recommend medication or not. The next thing to do is keep a journal on your feelings and moods. You can share it with the psychologist or you can keep it to yourself. Exercise! I know that it's easier said than done when you are faced with depression, but just get up and do it! Don't think, just act. Take a walk around the block. You'll feel 10 times better when you have accomplished something. Surround yourself with positive people. Friends and family that know your situation and are there for you when you need to talk.

There are too many 'outlets' out of a depression. Exercise is one of the best. Meditation. Journaling. Reduce caffeine. Never stop work totally, but perhaps part-time may serve as distraction. There are many self-help groups you can call the Family Service Centers to find out. AA is for alchoholics but their program fits anyone with any life issues.

Aerobic exercises such as walking, running, swimming, bicycling, or as Allie says, sex. They all get the heart pumping and the fresh oxygen into the blood stream which effects your mood. Do it regularly and solely for the purpose of doing it, whichever of the above, or combination of the above, you choose. As an old doctor that worked with me in my counseling center once told me, "If people would go for a walk daily, enough to get their heart pumping and oxygen flowing, there'd be no depression or anxiety." Then he added, "but they won't, because it's free and easy and they want an expensive diagnosis and prescription, and so we'll always be in business". Sad to say he was right. He was a full-blooded American Indian whose first and middle name was Royal Hunter. He died of old age about 10 years ago, and I retired from the mental health business about 8 years ago, much younger than he. Follow his advice, and your depression will be gone, at no cost for prescription meds or psychiatric treatment. God Bless you.

The best way to get out of depression is to understand what it is that caused it to begin with. Often times it begins with a rough relationship with one or both parents. This affects your relationships with other kids when you are at school. Sometimes these adverse relationships that you have as a kid at school and as a child at home then carries over into the adult years. Often times the feelings that one feels continues to snowball and get more and more severe as time goes on. It can have detrimental effects on relationships as an adult.
Depression frequently causes people to have highly distorted perceptions of reality. Psychologists/psychiatrists can frequently help. They are especially good at getting to the root of what is causing depression to begin with. Good luck and I hope that you find the happiness that you seek.
