I want to learn how to compose techno music (house, dance, rave, etc) and I am not sure where to look to get started. Whenever I search for books on DJing it is always info about buying equipment and setting up speakers instead of composing. What should I be searching for?

PS: Any other suggestions about how i can learn to compose music like this is GREATLY appreciated. =)

Ok, grab yourself a copy of Fruity Loops Pro or Orion Platinum or even Reason.
Those are top of the line production software suites. You will find everything you need on there plus with VSTi based prorams such as Orion and FLP you can add software synths. A software based top grade synth such as KORG LEGACY.

ALong with your softwae you will find basic tutorials on how to creat a beat melody and use various FX that can be applied to your track.

A really good place to start is to read a few technical books on audio and synthesizers. However, if you need something to play around with NOW, try messing with FL Studio (formerly FruityLoops). It's a program that is basically an all-in-one audio production suite, but it's nicely designed for dance and techno music. It's pretty complex to use, but not really much worse than any combination of other software/synths you would use. This will also be a good test for you to see if this is really what you want to do. You will probably be intimidated by the interface, all the knobs, dials and switches, some of which seemingly do nothing and have strange names like "DFT" and "Cut", but if you take enough time to mess around with the program and learn its ins and outs, you have the potential to make great electronic music. The website is http://www.flstudio.com and they sell the software online in three different packages, but luckily they have a demo for you to mess around with. You can also find the program in a box version in music shops like Guitar Center, but I would buy the download version instead if you decide to go for it, simply because free lifetime updates come with the download version, while you have to pay $29 for lifetime updates with the CD. Check out that website, check out any links you find from there as well, and just keep reading into it. FL Studio is definitely the way to go. You won't regret it.

Try "learn how to compose techno music" in the search box.

For your info, years ago a DJ was a disc jockey, one who handles the LPs(records) - like in a radio station or discoteque. Now the term dj is still the one who plays the music, but now it involves tapes, etc.
