"Lay, Lady, Lay" - The Story is Told that Dylan wrote "Lay, Lady, Lay" for the film Midnight Cowboy, but missed the deadline. Instead the song landed on Nashville Skyline, the 1969 album that did more than any other single factor to bridge the gap between country and rock. A concurrent guest spot by Bob on the first episode of Johnny Cash's TV show helped launch both the record and the television series. Elvis Presley had just done his '68 comeback special and was back on the charts with "In the Ghetto" and "Suspicious Minds". It was the first time that rock, then about 15 years old, tried to stake out a way to be for grownups, not just teenagers. Although Dylan was seen at the time as the god of the hippies, he wanted no part of that. Nashville Skyline saw him working, if not in the same field as Elvis and Cash, at least one meadow over.
