hand clapping actually started in the early fourteenth century by king henry the 3rd of portugal who was also known as henry the clapper. if a performer at his court displeased him, he would clinch his fists and bang them together knuckles to knuckles. that was a sign that the performer would be punished or banned from any more appearances before the king. if , however, he were to unclinch his fists and bring his palms together. that was a sign of open hands and the performer would be accepted by the king. his court would follow suit accordingly and if a person's performance was satisfactory, everyone would clap. thus we have the beginning of the hand clap as a sign of approval.
