10 or 11 I found two records along the side of the road in a Kmart bag, April Wine "Nature of the Beast" and Kenny Rogers "greatest hits" Well April Wine turned me onto rock and Roll, from there I evolved to JP, ACDC, Metallica, Slayer, Pantera and now 25 years later I am still into hardcore thrash/death metal, if it wasnt for that i would have been stuck listening to the statler bros and beatles records of my parents

i had to answer because im laughing so hard at prez's answer, for me it was the who when i was 12 my parents always listened to jazz and so the who just blew me away, there still a big favorite, later on bob marley was hugely influential on me as far as transcending borders and bringing a message to the world, still a fave and as a guitarist myself of course the mighty and powerful led zeppelin...and i totally forgot that essentially it was the beatles that turned me on to rock (maybe not thrash metal but still rock c'mon give some props) me and my buddy when we were nine would actually listen to those old records and grab the tennis rackets and pretend to be the beatles, makes it sound like im really old but im only the 36,maybe that is old?lol

Well I'm a mellow chick. One day I heard this country singer on a tele show and I was sold on country music. That was 10 years ago. My taste has changed a bit in country music since then - not so much the dreary stuff but more the happy stuff now.

In 1978, Cheap Trick was my first real rock experience, listened to gluey top 40 crap before that (Tom Jones, Olivia Newton John, ABBA, Etc.) then started discovering AC/DC, Van Halen, etc...

So, I to turned rock because of listening to Cheap Trick at my best friends house, when I was 15 :)

BUT, when I moved to Flagstaff AZ in 1984, I discovered Country music, unlike my parents listened to, so that was also an "awakening", I listen to rock and country, sometimes "smooth jazz", am I weird? ;)

Sorry, but if it weren't for The Beatles, modern musical genres would not have been defined.

Well good for you that you listen to the garbage that you listen to. I hope that that stuff has been beneficial to you, that it has greatly improved your life.
For me, there is nothing like good old fashioned gospel music. Like Bill Gaither and the Homecoming Friends. Only that kind of music can have a positive influence on my life.
