I am 6'1'', about 220. I play TE this year, but plan to try out for QB next year. I can only throw about 30 yards accurately. What can i do in the next year to improve my arm strength to a 60+ yard pass?

Weightlifting can help, but that won't help your technique. Throwing will. Throw and throw and throw. It's like baseball pitchers who long-toss to keep their arm loose and can eventually throw harder.

So don't get caught up in the distance derby. It doesn't matter how far you throw; more how accurately you throw. That means in the pocket, rolling out, even backpedaling. Jeff George had one of the strongest arms in the NFL, but a guy with (comparatively) a noodle arm like Joe Montana is one of the best ever because he knew WHERE to throw it and was accurate as hell.

One thing NFL QBs do is set up garbage cans and then try to drop the ball into the garbage cans from so many yards away.

Otherwise, just get a WR to practice running routes with you, and practice everything from short to long.

To begin, some tips about throwing a football. You might well know these already.

First, lead with the opposite foot from your throwing arm. So, if you are right handed lead into your throw with a good stride from your left foot to provide momentum and direction for your throw.

Second, coil the 'spring' in your throwing arm by bringing your elbow high and well back. It should be behind your shoulder -- not beside or in front of it. The leading tip of the football should be at least as far back as your ear.

Third, make sure you throw a spiral by allowing the ball to roll off your fingers tips. It will be more aerodynamic through the air.

Fourth, follow through strongly with your throwing arm, then shoulder, then hip, and finally leg on your throwing side.

You are mistaken if you think that simply building strength in your arm will improve the distance you can throw. It could even have the reverse effect.

You need power, the ability of your muscle fibres to contract strongly -- but quickly.

So, include in your gym work some explosive type exercises. The weights must be far less than your maximum, of course, no more than about 65 %

I expect you realise that the key muscles to concentrate on are your pectorals major, deltoids, and triceps. (Forget the biceps -- that is just to impress the girls with.)

You probably also already know a good drill for accuracy. Hang an old bycycle tire from the cross bars of a soccer goal by two ropes. Use the hole as a target. If you have the luxury of somone to help train you, you can arrange it so that they can slide the tyre by means of a third rope giving you a moving trarget.

Part of the throwing process is mental -- not just phsycial. So, keep a record to motivate yourself. Increase your number of bulls eyes -- and the distance you score them from progessively.

Weight lifting should be the way to go.

But I think instead of throwing deep, what about trying to throw it right when you are pressured ?

What about throwing accurate when you are on the run ? That seems to be the more commodity talent.

Hitting the guy on the stride when you are running is more desirable.

I agree with those who said Accuracy>Power. It is really true. Plus, many long passes are complied mostly of YAC from the WR. You don't generally have to get the ball 60+ yards yourself.
