Either way, God wants you to pray. A prayer is best explained as a conversation with God. No matter where you are or what you are doing God wants to hear from you. Open the eyes of your heart. a2J

Its instinctual for one thing to bow down before your master. The Muslims bow down while facing Mecca in prayer five times a day. THis instinct goes way back in animal evolution. Look at dogs in the park. The very submissive ones will lower their head and tail and even bow down to the dominant ones. Some anthropologists believe that religion started with the primates worshipping the all powerful leader of the troop. Humans still have a powerful instinct for hero worship which can evolve into religions.

Unfortunately it IS about humility. In the Middle Ages, vassals would bow, genuflect, kneel or prostrate themselves before their lord to show subservience to his rule. This model was used for every hierarchical relationship, including religious ones. Since God was the ultimate sovreign, all had to bow before him. We've just inherited a lot of baggage from the past.
Looking people in the eye is considered a statement of equality, even today. You bow because people expect you to, not because it's necessary. If you don't bow, people think you're not taking God seriously.

We are bow down our head whe we are praying because:
1)it is an instruction from our Allah such in Surah 15 Al HIJR verse 29 , 30 and 31 Allah instructed angels and satans to bow down to Adam as human,All angels did but satans did not want it.
2)it is a sign that we human beings are humble and should appreciate and dedicate our lives to Allah
3)it is proof that human being has many sins and Allah is merciful and helpful
4)angels bow to humans so humans should bow to Allah as their creator.

It's just a way to show devotion and respect.
Of course God is supposed to be up high in heaven, but the symbolism of bowing down remains the same.
It probably originated as a show of respect to human dignitaries in high positions, like kings and emperors, who indeed could look down on bowed heads.

To bow to the Lord would be a sign of respect. When Jesus returns to the earth, we will be in such awe that everyone will bow in reverence to the Lord.

It is out of respect for God. You can pray in reverence this way. You can also pray with your hands raised, hands waving, looking to the sky, to honor and worship Him. If it respects God it is OK to pray and talk to Him in your own way.

I always thaught of it as a sign of respect. That is definitely a Q I am going to ask my minister. Now that you have asked the Q I'm not sure that what I have always thought was the right answer IS the right answer! Thanks for giving me something to ponder between now and next Sunday!
