Never tried to drill through tiger nuts before, but whenever I want to drill through something without cracking it, I either drill through running water to reduce friction, or tape up whatever it is I'm drilling and drill through the tape. You could also try a smaller drill bit and/or a faster drill (or a micro tool such as a Dremmel).
