Only by taking an x-ray. But usually if it hurts and is swollen, it's probably badly sprained or broken. There's not a lot you can do about a broken finger, except for ice, pain relief (NSAIDs), and a finger splint. Just try to keep it stationary and try not to use it.

I broke my finger, it was very painful but I could still use it just. I didn't see a doctor for a week or so, by then it was to late for them to set it properly, I now have a permanent bend at the end of my finger......
Get an x-ray

X-ray is the only real answer. But if it is swollen, painful, and particularly if it has turned a really deep shade of purple, I would suspect a fracture. My husband fractured his toe this summer and those were his symptoms. I had to drag him to the urgent care clinic but sure enough, the x-ray showed he had a chip fracture. They didn't do anything about it, he just had to be careful and wear his soft deerskin shoes for a while because they are stretchy and comfortable and didn't put any pressure on the area.

Get an X-ray.
I broke 3 fingers once, but I did not go to hospital for 3 days, cause I could still use them. Breaks occur in different ways, so a professional needs to X ray to be sure.

If it hurts, it's probably just sprained, possibly fractured. If it hurts like H**L, it's probably broken. If it's pointed a direction you could point it in before that's a good sign it's broke too. HAHA
Go to the doctor. Get an X-Ray. Only way to be sure and make sure it gets better.

The only "true" way to be absolutely positively sure is to get an x-ray.

It would be tough and very painful to move it. It would need a X Ray.
