Well, I can tell you we don't run power lines from California! The islands aren't even connected with each other as far as electricity goes. When Oahu and Maui were out, Molokai and Lanai continued to have electricity. Here on Molokai, the power flickered long enough to restart my computer, but not affect my clock radio or microwave.
Most of the power stations in Hawaii burn oil. There is one on Oahu that burns some trash, I do believe, but it provides a small fraction of that island's power. I believe the same can be said of west Maui's wind turbines.
Islanders try to reduce their dependence on electricity in several ways, for several reasons. Most folks heat water and cook with some form of natural gas. Solar panels and water heaters are subsidized by the local utility (which must spend money to build more facilities on each island if demand goes up too much). And in rural Hawaii, good use is made of solar clothes dryers (aka clotheslines).
There is no nuclear power in Hawaii, thank goodness! Hawaii is an excellent place to experiment with alternative energies. Local folks want to keep the island's many ecosystems healthy and their beaches clean.
On Maui, people can run their diesel cars on biodiesel, whish is made from recycled vegetable oil, and makes your exhaust smell like french fries! I live on an island where the maximum legal speed is 45 and there are no traffic lights. Since there are only three gas stations and 7000 people, I think it's the perfect place to completely replace the gasoline vehicle with something more environmentally friendly. Wish I had the money to do it!

properly, i could evaluate it this form: i could learn a windmill's unfavorable aspects to the unfavorable aspects different varieties of means flowers, which includes coal-fired, gasoline-fired or maybe nuclear-powered. i'm able to checklist many extra unfavorable aspects of those means plant approaches - each little thing from air pollution to nuclear waste storage. everyone of those means plant approaches have extra unfavorable aspects than those which you listed approximately windmills. And, with regards to T. V. connection and noise ranges, those may be triumph over by using in basic terms putting it extra from areas of inhabitants. I definitely have been to Hawaii, and there are areas the place windmills could paintings effectively - far off from inhabitants centers.

from power generating plants.... where else? they have automatic shut-off mechanisms that sense the vibration from an earthquake and shut down the plant for safety. this is why there were power outages from the earthquake.
