They don't really communicate with us, but go on living through the lessons they have left us, the way we have internalized their message, the unique relationship we had with them, the awareness we were loved by them, the similarities in our looks or/and our personality. Our unconscious mind finds means of healing our pain and longing by making us dream about them as if they were real. But whether it's real or a mere creation of our imagination is as irrelevant as assessing the value of our own poetical world. What happens in those dreams anyhow is still part of their legacy and of the special bond we had with them.

Except highly evolved being, spirits that hang around are usually of those people who either died suddenly or catastrophically or several unfulfilled desires or have immense fears of after life. An ancestor hanging around unquenched, hurt or even broken is a bad sign for any family, so do all that you can to help them in their difficult period, there by you will help your future generations.
It is so essentially to have proper burial or cremation service so that the departed soul knows that people are there to pray for their soul’s salvation.
Praying for the souls of the departed is a good practice for all families as there by you are ensuring that someone is there is to pray for your peace and salvation in to the Light.
Interestingly, in India we have a period called 'Pritrapaksha' or the Fortnight of Ancestors, in which all family members come together to pray together for the departed souls in the entire clan or ancestry. Known or unknown.
We ask for their forgiveness and blessings, even offer our own forgiveness to them so that they are clear of all earthly bonds and move on and so can we, into a brighter future, after having learnt all our lesson from the past which is represented by our ancestors.
