The 2 best property blocks to own in the game are the Oranges & the Reds.. or the "Free Parking Corner".
Statistically speaking, these two blocks are the most commonly landed spots. The Red block are more damaging in a fast-paced game while the Orange block are more damaging in slower-paced games.
I have managed to win games owning these two blocks while trading away Boardwalk & Park Place in order to secure these two blocks because of the frequency of players hitting these spaces & the low frequency of me hitting Boardwalk & Park Place.
I don't try to secure the greens & the dark blues (Boardwalk & Park Place) because they're the most expensive to develop.

A lot of people mistakenly assume that because they carry the highest rent, the dark blues (Park Place and Boardwalk) are the best to have. However, they cost a fortune to build up to the level that they can seriously damage someone, and even when you do have them built up, people still have to hit them.
I agree with TStodden that the oranges and reds are a much better investment. They don't cost nearly as much to build up, and they get hit a LOT.
Consider players coming out of Jail: If you get out with double 3s or 4s, you've just hit the orange group. If you pay to get out, you'll hit orange on a roll of 6, 8, or 9, which will happen better than one time in three (14 out of 36). And while there is no card that takes you specifically to an orange space, getting the "Go back 3 spaces" card on the Chance space in the red group will put you on New York Ave., and the "Advance to nearest railroad/utility" cards can position you to hit the orange group, depending on where you are on the board when you get them.
The reds are also very damaging, as they get hit a lot as well. There's a Chance card for Illinois Ave., and again, the "Advance to nearest railroad/utility" cards can put you in position to hit them.
I've won several games by trading away the dark blue set to someone who places entirely too much value on it, in exchange for oranges and reds. By the time they raise enough money to build up the "big guns", I've already picked them apart with those $1000-ish rents on built up oranges and reds.

Yes, that's how the game works, because if one player owns all the same colour then they can charge double the rent, so all the other players have to make sure that they do not own all of them and buy them out. It's not called the 'Family Break-Up" game for nothing, it's banned in my house!

It really depends on your strategy. If you buy up all the really cheap properties in a row, then everyone will land on them. Where as if you only buy a few of the higher priced ones, the chances of people landing on them is less. That's why it is a strategy game and a game based on luck.
