Hello Keysha,
There are products on the market that you can buy, in either liquid, crystal or powdered form, that contain enzymes that will break down the wood, causing it to rot, and slowly disintegrate. It does take a little time, but, if you don't want to disturb favorite flower beds or foliage, this might be the answer for you.
Check with your local greenhouse or hardware/ garden center.
Good luck! PS: Organics are wildlife friendly, lye based and acid based are NOT. (Could kill birds, desireable insects, pets, etc.)
Peace
Kaye

Composting away a tree stump could potentially take a decade depending on the size, and anything strong enough to desolve a tree stump is most likely not something you want to pour into the ground anywhere near where you live. You can try burning it, but it may be against your local regulations, plus it's not exactly the safest thing to do. Your best bet is to hire a professional arborist/tree surgeon and have them remove it.

There are machines called stump grinders which are used to remove the stump down to some distance below the ground surface. Don't know if you can rent them but there are folks who provide the service. Check with anyone in the business of tree removal.

Stump grinding machines can be rented, but the best thing really is to hire someone who has one to come do it for you. I've got two that I'm going to have done in the next couple of weeks.

I don't want to go the chemical route because I want to get it over and done with so I can amend the soil and plant something by spring.

Ask the people at Home Depot or Lowe's for recommendations. A friend recommended one for me. I'm getting several estimates so I can get the best deal for the best work.

Why remove it? We have one in our yard that has been there for 5 years, and every spring we put a birdbath on it, plant climbing plants around it, like moom flowers, and enjoy the birds all year. It's a large stump and my grand kids enjoy hiding behind it while playing hide and seek.

Ask your local Tree Service (It's "Asplundah Tree Service" here) they should have a machine that will shave it down below ground level.
Burning works but if it gets away from you and you don't have a burning permit, you could be help liable for all damages.

Hire a "stump grinder" guy that uses a machine with a very large spinning cutting wheel to grind it down.

Pour used motor oil down in it. Drill holes first if you have to. Turns it into saw dust. Then you can just dig out the pieces with a shovel.

Start by burning it. They also sell "stump remover" that you just pour onto it. Takes time but it will deteriorate

How about building a compost heap right over it? With time the microbes just might decompose it for you.
