Where are you located? In wet moist wooded areas you can find salamanders fairly eaisily. In the desert you can find about 50 species of lizzards in your average backyard.

Any idea on color, time of year, localtion?

One of the most widely distributed lizards in California is the western fence lizard. Its color can range from brown, to grey but it doesnt have so much spots as it does splotches or bands. Take a look at these images http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=western%20fence%20lizard&btnG=Google+Search&sa=N&tab=wi
Also here is a website dedicated to California herptofauna i.e, reptiles http://www.californiaherps.com/

they might be Anoles. I lived in Southern Florida and they are all over the place most of the year. They come in many different colors.
