I need to unclog my bathtub drain, but the drain stopper won't come out. I have tried unscrewing it both left and right, partial turning and pulling it out, and trying to wiggle it free, nothing works.
The drain stopper is made out of metal and seems to have a little metal rod going down with a rounded end that is under a hole to small to pull it out from. The hole is in the centre of some type of criss cross thing.

Are you talking about a stopper or the actual drain grate? It sounds like you have a stopper that you turn to get it to plug the drain, then lift and turn to let the water drain. If you have one of those, the stopper has to be closed (i.e. able to hold water) to remove it. Once it's closed, take some pliers and turn it counter-clockwise - like you would remove a screw. But don't pull up on it until it's screwed out all the way.
If that's not what you have, then I just wasted your time. Sorry. :)

Bathtub Drain Removal

If you can straighten out a wire clothes hanger and insert it through the holes of the drain stopper, you may not need to remove the stopper.

Straighten out the wire clothes hanger and slowly wiggle it down the pipe through the drain stopper. You may feel some resistance, that could be where you are clogged...gently push on the wire clothes hanger. Try going up and down, gently until you are able to continue insert the wire clothes hanger further down the pipe. Do not force and use common sense.

Also, you might simply use a plunger you can buy at Home Depot or any plumbing supply store for under ten dollars...Many times the drain will become clogged with hair and a few hits with the plunger may loosen everything.

There are drain cloggers on the market they may also help.

I just hooked my fingers down in mine and twisted till is finally completely came unscrewed. Have a bucket of hot bleach water right next to you though cause all drains are home to little creepy crawlies that latch on to the dirt and grime that doesn't go down but gets trapped. Remember...righty tighty lefty loosey.

Tub Drain Stopper

That "metal thing" is actually a mesh to keep your hairs out. You're NOT suppose to remove that. A stopper is usually made of rubber and it keeps the water in.

just use a plunger to un-clog your drain. Fill your tub with a little bit of water. Place your plunger over the drainage and just pump up and down a few times. if you see any big lumps of dirt, try to scoop it up before it goes down and clogs the drain again.

My advice for you would be to get a plumber. If you don't know what you are doing you could make a simple problem into a major problem, not to mention a expensive and embrassing one. Water damage in a home can be expensive to repair. If you damage your tub connection to the pipe, even a small leak could cost thousands. A expreince my mother learned the hard way.
