I don't know exactly what kind of spider you have their, except to know it is definitely NOT a black widow- male or otherwise. I believe what you have their is a relative of the wolf spider family, and I know there is a version common to California. If you check out the various pages on arachnids, and check out the wolf family of spiders, I think you will see the familiy resemblance. Wolf spiders are not particularly dangerous, any more so than most spiders, unless you happen to be a tasty bug. If you were really concerned, an entimologist would likely be able to actually identify it for you, as would the local pest control folks. The long legs are creepy, but that's about the worst of it.

This appears to be a male black widow spider. A female is larger, darker colored and has a red patch on it. These are venomous spiders so use caution as even getting the venom on skin without an actual bite can be a source of pain not unlike the bite. Check out the attached web site and compare it with your spider to be sure. I don't think brown recluse spiders live in CA and your spider doesn't look like those. Check out the attached web side for a picture of the brown recluse.

I think it looks like a Brown Recluse spider. Maybe if you search Brown Recluse on the Internet you'll be able to see a picture of one and I bet it'll be a match. They're some nasty little spiders..very venomous! Dangerous!
I hope I'm wrong...I hope it's just a simple little friendly nonvenomous type of spider! Best Wishes!

I agree. It feels like a backyard spider,Araneus diadematus, of direction seeing it in basic terms from under doesnt supply one hundred% id even though it shows, that it actual is a few species of genus Araneus and maximum worry-unfastened one is diadematus. She is a woman, men of this species are very small whilst in comparison with gorgeous fat females. She isn't risky and would not harm you in any way. enable her into backyard and he or she can proceed to exist and grant help to do away with nasty pests. those spiders are perfect... i ought to take a seat down and watch them for hours, extraordinarily whilst they are making their information superhighway.

Notice the same brown bands on the legs, and the similar markings on the back.
