Um... if not, show me someone else that was a self acknowledged racist AND also lept into the stands to beat a crippled heckler half to death.

I knew, of course of the actions of Judge Landis...

But I thank the two that added the information about "Cap" Anson. It was information that somehow, I had not heard before. It's always good to be educated by someone's answer.

In a game peopled with heros, rogues, neer-do-wells, dopers and great athletes, Tyrus Cobb is the lowest of the low. A vile, nasty, racist jerk who played without asking for or giving any quarter. And one of the finest players the game has ever known. I just wish he could have faced Bob Gibson and had one planted in his ear...

So? Who ever says that has never read the book Cobb. By the way if you are lazy about that watch the movie! Yes he absolutely the most vile man n baseball history but he was also one of the top 5 hitters not sluggers in baseball history. Being a bigot in baseball back then was not as much of a big deal half the white people in the U.S. were. Going into the stands to beat a cripple beating prostitutes sharpening your spikes with intent to mame another player now that is why he was the most vile man.

If you want to base this on racism, do not forget about Adrian "Cap" Anson, the first baseman of the Cubs in the 19th century. Because of this idiot and his views, black men were kept from playing in the major leagues for close to fifty years. And also, despite the good he had done during his tenure as commissioner, Kennesaw "Mountain" Landis personally kept this edict. Black ballplayers were not allowed until after his death.

If Cobb was in fact human, he was barely human...

I was also going to mention Cap Anson, but Craig G beat me to it!

Cobb never beat anyone to death, with a cane or otherwise, but he did get in a lot of fights off the field.

He either beat or shot a black hotel guard who'd asked Cobb to identify himself.

And, Cobb did beat a crippled fan who insulted him. The players sided with Cobb, because the insult the name the fan called Cobb was "more than any white person should have to take".

A lot of people who knew Cobb supposedly said he was a mild-mannered gentleman, unless he perceived a threat of any kind... apparently, he perceived a LOT of threats in his life!

Cobb of course, didn't invent racism, it was taught to him.

It is hard to say because I am not familiar with everyone in the hall. He is far and away the most vile that I am aware of.
I read in a biography that he once met a black man in a hotel lobby who had refused to refund Cobb's wife for some spoiled fish that she had purchased. Cobb asked the man's name to make sure he was the same man, and then proceeded to beat him to death with his cane. Sounds pretty vile to me.

You limit the parameter for discussion therefor winning the argument by eliminating any other consideration. Cobb was a great ball player but of questionable behavior.

Most people that I've read on the history of baseball seem to agree that Ty Cobb was pretty much the vilest person in baseball (if you don't count team owners).

Yes he is rather a douche bag and has been caught on many occasions committing douchbaggery. The beating up of the cripple was definitely a dick move on his part.
